H. Expository Composition period 6

If you scored less than below an 80 or 75 on your character analysis essay, you have a 45-50 point deficit to overcome for your grade. It will not be overcome by Juxtaposition poem points, or We Real Cool Write Likes, or Chapter 7-10 or the Student Self Reflection for Student Conferences. The point values for these assignments will get you CLOSER, yet, if you turn around and write an in-class essay that is weak then you will be right back at square one.

Is it only learning abstract concepts, or is it learning to actually produce something or both? What aspects of his Atlanta Compromise Speech are compelling to you and why? A Lot of Homework Alert!
1. Complete Research based SOAPS Sheet and upload under SOAPS Sheet #2. Be sure to print for your own ease.
2. Read Chapters 7-10 of The Fall of Rome.  To help you remember key events, answer the study questions below:
1. Why do you think Chapter 7 is entitled, Men Among Men? Chapter 8-The Wall of Pain; Chapter 9: Speed?  How are these titles both literal and figurative? Additionally:
Who is Ted Fox? What evidence from the text suggests that Jerome Washington was overlooked for Ted's job (two reasons).  Who is Derrick Harper? Why is it significant that Derrick attends Howard university and is still an accomplished or prosperous lawyer?  When Rashid visits Gerald's house he sometimes feels like an outcast and sometimes fits right in. When does he feel out of place? Why do you think the author allows these awkward moments?  Discuss the irony in Mr. Washington "coaching" Rashid to become a better runner?

3. Complete your Creative Writing Juxtaposition Assignment.

Expository Composition Period 5 Homework

1. Find and read ANOTHER Research Article from the Digital Library on your topic. Download and also complete another Research SOAPS Analysis. This is due by Monday afternoon 12 noon.
2. Read this excerpt of juxtaposition from A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens: It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way--in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.
Then, rewrite your own version in which you juxtapose two opposite/opposing people, ideas, family members, concepts, etc! Have fun with it!

The Stranger Discussion Questions

Discussion Questions
Select any two of the following and discuss:
1. In the text, Meursault states in a matter of fact way, "that people don't change their lives." In many ways this seems inaccurate, but in many ways it is true.  Think back to Mr. Washington in The Fall of Rome. Think to Amir in The Kite Runner. Change is one of the most hardest things to do. Why? Discuss why people rarely change.
2. In The Stranger, Marie asks Meursault if he loves her, and he says no. Clearly he is not affectionate as she would like him to be, yet she hangs around.  Why do people hang around or settle when they are not totally happy or fulfilled? Discuss the idea of settling. Is it ever okay to settle?
3. We don't really like Meursault, in part because he seems so upfront and direct and says things that he is thinking, but perhaps should not be said out loud.  Why do we often have a problem with those who say what they are thinking? Is this always a negative trait, or are words, according to the Ibo, meant to be "eaten with palm oil"?

To what extent to you agree or disagree? How has what it means to be a wife changed? Has it? Might it be different in your culture? What parts of the essay (in terms of style or structure) did you like or appreciate or see yourself using in your essay?

Expository Composition: Analyzing What is Poverty???

In her essay, "What Is Poverty?" Jo Goodwin Parker never defines poverty using a dictionary definition.  Rather, she uses a series of examples and experiences.
(Discuss) 1. Which experience/example was most moving or vivid or disturbing to you and why?
2. Parker uses an array of literary devices: metaphor, similes, imagery.  Select one of each that is effective.  Why do you think each is effective?
3. Parker also presents her experiences in a lens that is uniquely female. Select 2 compelling images that point to a woman's particular experience of being poor. Why was each effective.
4. Write a paragraph or two on What is Poverty, but from the experience of a Latina/Latino; or a teenager; or a male; or an elderly person; or a member of another group.
5. With a partner, complete a SOAPS Analysis of the essay (this way we wont have to do two).
6. What would you like to define?

AP English Literature period 1

If you did not submit dialectical journals or Major Data Worksheets--keep them. Although you received a zero, perhaps you will have the chance to submit before the 20 week in June.  It is disrespectful of the work demanded by an AP English Literature Course to return after a three week break without the assignment.

2018 Favorites

In making a list of favorites, we can assume that there are phenomena that did not make the list.  It much easier to create a list of favorite or top reads if one has only read a few articles, or novels, or poems or plays. If one reads, views, and listens widely, it is much more difficult to confine ones favorites to a list of five or six titles, which is what you are being instructed to do.  Identify your top six in each category: Music/Albums; Films/TV/Netflix/Hulu; Readings: Novels, Plays, Poems, Articles.  For each, include the title, author, director, when it aired, and why the title made it to your list. Include a micro-synopsis of the text.  Include one additional category not listed here. Your final draft must be typed, and is due Friday.

Welcome To World Literature!

Welcome to World Literature. This course has several requirements: among them, you will read, analyze, discuss and research novels from parts of the World other than the United States OR for groups inside the United States that are rarely assigned. But before we delve into rules, course requirements, and the like, we will begin with favorites from 2018. We will also have a little fun! Former President Barack Obama released his favorites of 2018. Read his here:
Former President Releases his favorites.  Today, we will begin to create our own favorite list, making some adjustments.  What/Who are your favorite songs; new artists, movies, novels or articles of the week; social media happenings; political developments? You will create your top five with a justification for each title on your list!
