H. World Literature Period 5

Homework: You should have read a chunk  or half a chunk (if a chunk is more than 100 pages) of your World Literature Circle Novel.  Be sure to look under Class Readings and Handouts (Scroll Down) and complete your TWO Literature Circle Role Sheets: remember EVERYONE IS A LITERARY LUMINARY plus your other job (discussion director, etc.)
2. Read Chapter 4 of Where Did our Love Go and Complete/Finish looking up the vocabulary and all of the allusions listed on the handout!

Literature Circle Group Presentation Reflection: Discuss your groups presentation to the class. Do you feel that your group put forth your best effort?Why or why not? Was the presentation a team effort or did one group member take over or not contribute their fair share? Do you feel that your understanding of the novel was communicated? How? What was the best part of your presentation? If you could redo your presentation (in terms of the slides or oral presentation) what changes might you make? Feel free to discuss color, text, slides etc.  Use academic language and be sure your response is one page.

Tomorrow, we will complete our Identifying Sensory Details in The Narrative of Frederick Douglass presentations.  Please be sure to have your text; additionally after the lecture/powerpoint review of the patterns and motifs Frederick presents in his narrative, you will discuss the importance of those details.  You may be asked to work in your groups and also independently. Tomorrow's writing will be collected.

1. Complete your weekly Article of the Week using a SOAPS sheet (the guest teacher has the handouts). You may read the same article as a peer! Complete an academic summary that you would be proud of!
with three questions: a level one; an author and you; and an on my own.
2.  Complete the Allusions Assignment that was listed on your Where Did Our Love Go Handout.  Specifically, use wikipedia or another site to look up the following individuals and cases referenced in Chapter 4: X-Clan; Public Enemy; Delores Tucker; The Blackmans Guide; NWA.  You may record your findings on a sheet of paper. Since this is research, you may abbreviate. PLease include the name of the websites on your sheet.
3. Continue reading your literature circle novel. Bring it to class on Tuesday.

1. After your Article of the Week (you may use the Huffington Post) or a class magazine; complete your academic summary and three questions.
2. Then, you will continue to RE-READ the chapter you selected from The Narrative of Frederick Douglass and identify three to four examples of Sensory Language from your chapter. Tomorrow, you will work to discuss and put on a large poster and present to the class your chapter; the purpose, and how the sensory language supports the chapter.

1. Reflect: What were you able to identify in the poem "XIV" by Derek Walcott? How is reading a poem different from reading prose? BUT what skills are still needed when reading both poetry and prose?

4. Review the handouts for TPCASST , SIFT And SOAPS and DIDLS
5. Write a one age reflection based on your reading the TPCASST; DIDLS and SIFT Methods to analyze texts. Which method might you prefer? What is important to notice WHEN reading and analyzing a text? What devices are included in each of the four methods?
Classwork for Monday: Read over the study questions and complete Study Questions for The Kite Runner from the following sections chapters 15-20 complete questions 1,3,6,8,14. From Chapters 21-25 complete questions 1, 5, 7, 10. Be sure you have fully read the middle section of The Kite Runner--specifically the segments when Amir and Baba migrate to the United States, Amir meets Soraya; they marry; etc.
6. Re-read segments and sections of The Kite Runner--pay close attention to "boring" sections--the middle, and when Amir returns to Pakistan to see Rahim Khan.

1. Carefully read the entire handout given to you today regarding Chapter 4: Where Did Our Love Go. Define each of the vocabulary words listed on the vocabulary section.  Read the essential questions/understandings section. Bring Anticipation Guides and Books and be prepared to continue our discussion.

1. Write a one page reflection on your thoughts regarding today's powerpoint review of the Open Question. For your review, I have uploaded it in this message under Class Readings and Important Handouts. What was most helpful for you.
2. Re-read your completed essay that was returned to you.  Use the statements that you copied down from the front board (Validity of Interpretations) to answer the following:
What weaknesses did you find in your own writing/understanding and how will you work to remedy those weaknesses?
What strengths, or what in your essay makes you proud?
3. Please find your Verbs to use instead of "says" handout. Bring the Kite Runner and your Essay.
Tomorrow, however, may be spent writing another in-class prose essay and Kite Runner Essay Exams and discussion may be saved for next week.

1. Complete the analysis of the older prose passage on work from the 1983 exam. You were to:
identify 8 names for work; identify 4 of the authors claims using the authors language; answer: why does the author use similes and metaphors?
Identify, in order from the text specific examples of: a. an allusion b. extended metaphor c. simile e. alliteration d. visual imagery g. paradox  h. juxtaposition i. parallel structure  j. rhetorical question

2. Complete a SOAPS for the passage
3. Do you agree with the author? Why or why not. Support your response with evidence from observation, the text, and or experience.
4. Be sure to bring $5.00 to register for the AP English Literature exam by Monday if you haven't already done so.

Do you think that the music and its lyrics have influenced female self-perception or is the music solely entertainment? 2. Continue Reading The Kite Runner. Please read or re-read to or beyond Chapter 23. I will check journals, and ask for you to discuss your entries.  Please be advised that we will both have a multiple choice and short answer test of The Kite Runner; be expected to use The Kite Runner as a novel choice for previously released essays.

On Friday, you will participate in the Womens Herstory Month Celebration. Consequently, this assignment is due on Monday. You will read another short narrative, "Champion of the World" 
by Maya Angelou. Complete a SOAPS and another sensory details chart. Pay specific attention to Angelou's use of sensory details.

Today, after hearing art presentations, and sharing responses to your hip-hop journal, and favorite hip-hop song, we will engage in online research to accomplish two goals:
1. Who is the author of my literature circle novel? What is their background? Age? Social class? Education? How is this background, heritage, social experience reflected in their writing?  In one page you will complete a summarized version of several sources you viewed to glean information about your author.
2. Where is the country that my author writes about or hails from? How is its history influenced by its geography? Borders? Who are its people? What influences are present on the cultures? Interaction with the United States or other European power? What patterns and motifs are present in the writing?
What major social or political event influenced the nation and its people?
3. A Hip-Hop Timeline: you will research the most important events, prolific artists, top rated albums; most influential or controversial groups in hip-hop.

1. What is your absolute all time favorite rap or hip hop song? Why? Write the "story" of your falling in love with that song/songs.  How old were you? What makes it so cool to you? If possible, have it ready to hear on your phone.
2. Finish your SOAPS and the Academic Summary--WRITTEN ON A SEPARATE SHEET OF PAPER for your article.  Create questions for your article: 1 author and you; 1 on my own (discussion based); 1 right there.  Write these on the separate sheet of paper as well.
3. Oder, borrow or check out Hip Hop Generation. you are able to purchase it on your Kindle for less money.
4. Write a reflection on your King Lear Three Dimensional Project.  What did you do? What did you hope to accomplish? What medium did you use? Why? What part of the play most inspired and influenced your artwork? Must be at least one page.
5. Type up the following: The Title of your artwork (Give it a title); The Act and Scene that most inspired it; the medium used-- clay, paint; paper maiche--whatever materials you used to design it; and then your name.  Carefully read and spell check this.  Center it on a page and type on no larger than size 14 font.  Be sure to include the title of your piece and your name at the top. This will be glued onto cardstock so that when visitors visit our classroom, they will know exactly what they are looking at; what inspired it. etc.

King Lear Discussion and Review Day.

Select one of the following topics to respond using your Lear text, your opinion, and observations.
1. Whose Zooming Who? Who do you feel is most manipulated in King Lear? Is it the men? or the Women? Could King Lear be considered a battle of the sexes? Or of the generations?
2. Who would you cast to play King Lear? Create a list of today's actors and why you would cast them for specific roles.
3. Do the men behave more honorably in the play or do the women? Why?
4. Do you think the action of the play would have been different had King Lear featured a mother?...Did you get that? There are NO mothers in the play.
II. Contribute two questions for our Kahoot Review game tomorrow, with answer choices.

Even if your group cant all meet, have one student pick up the poster and you use the phone or social media to discuss how The Kite Runner is related to your chosen chapter and the questions/topics provided. As a tip-re-read the chapter from How to Read Literature Like A Professor that you and your team will present. Bring in the text to class tomorrow.

AP English Literature period 1

1. Continue reading The Kite Runner. Journals for Chapter 14-17 are due Thursday! I may keep them to look closer at your quotes and responses.
2. Finish TWO of your MINI Research assignments. Remember the subjects include: The Taliban; Sunni versus Shia Islam; The Drug Trade in Afghanistan; The Oppression of Women; the Treatment of Ethnic Minorities.
The Purpose of the Assignment: To expose students to historical and social forces that undergird and shape a story. You will cite your sources and write a full two pages on each topic.  Your two pages will include bulleted facts, terms and definitions as well as a reflective narrative of what you learned.
3. If you didnt finish the questions here they are: 1.       What selection of details on page 112 suggest that Amir’s family could never replace the loyalty of Ali and Hassan?
2.       How do the men react and respond to the Russian soldiers demands?  Consider the reaction from the woman’s husband; the other passengers, and lastly Baba? How do their reactions differ? What does each suggest?
3.       What do Baba’s remarks suggest about war and rape and violence?
4.       The Russian soldier who thwarts the attempted abuse states that “they are just boys, and when they come here, they find the pleasure of drug (117)”.  What product is produced into a drug whose lucrative sale has increased in Afghanistan?
