H. World Literature Period 5

1. King Lear Line Recitals are post-poned until I have shown you a short video clip of the film version. Many of you have asked about costumes and dress. The most important is your interpretation of the expression and feeling in the lines. Your full memorization and delivery with eye contact, clarity; expression, and pacing is more important than any costume. Costumes are complimentary.
2. Review the play up to where we are in Act IV. Next week, you will be writing Character Analysis Essays, using your Open Minds. You will have a Reading Quiz on Monday or Tuesday, and will be revisiting Comprehension Questions and Thematic ones.
3. We will also begin transitioning to World Literature near the end of the Week. Be sure to purchase The Hip-Hop Generation.

AP English Literature Period 1

1. Continue working on your "Why Characters Lie"? Assignment. You are to select two distinct texts and identify two characters in each text and the specific lies they tell.

Why do character’s lie? Today, you will select two distinct texts and analyze the lies told by the characters in each text.  As a reminder, the lies categorized by Stephanie Ericson include:

The White Lie                                       Facades  Out-and out lies
Deflecting                                                 Ignoring the plain facts
Dismissal                                                 Delusion
Stereotypes & Clichés                        Omission
Procedure:
Think about and if possible, select distinct texts. For example, you may not want to select both Oedipus Rex and Oedipus at Colonus, as these are a part of a trilogy.   Think about the texts read or assigned in which lies are told—the more the better or the more variation in lies told, the better.  Think about the foil characters in the novel or play.  Do they also  tell lies? The same types of lies?

Record your responses on your own paper. Organize the responses by text.  For each text, you must identify no fewer than four types of lies that are prominently told in that text.  You must also  not limit your analysis to one character; so be sure that you identify at least one other character who tells some sort of lie.

Then, as part of your analysis, you will compare and contrast the character in one texts who lie versus the one in the same who doesn’t.  You will compare and contrast the two characters from two texts who lie, versus the character or characters who don’t.

2. Next, rewrite/revise your statement about what Bronte communicates. Be sure to include the following opener, "In the opening excerpt from her 1849 novel Shirley, Charlotte Bronte......"
Then, after revising your thesis based on my feedback, identify the literary/language techniquest that your essay (if you were to write one) would discuss about how Bronte communicates a universal theme/message in the text.
