Expository Comp period 4; Honors World Lit period 5 and 6

 Today, I will be on campus but working on a school wide project. Please follow the lesson plan, upload what you need to in Schoology and be respectful to our guest teacher, Mrs. Morris. 

Period 4: SSR (10 minutes). 2. Then, meet in your literature circle groups as planned. Your meeting should last no longer than 15 minutes. Following, upload your Literature Circle Roll Sheet in Schoology. It will lock after the first 40 minutes of class. 3. Then use the handout on Okefenokee Swamp that we read yesterday.  Working with a partner, FIRST discuss ALL the differences in the two passages. Then discuss the similarities. Finally, write/type a paragraph in which you identify the differences and similarities between the two passages. 

Period 5: First, we will finish our short video on Greek Theatre.  Then, I will explain your padlet on your Independent Reading World Literature Author. Then, you will work independently on it.  

Period 6: SSR of Independent Reading Novel (10 minutes).  Then, I will lecture and introduce Greek Theatre. After that you will have Independent work time to read Sophocles Biography and do reflective journal.

Introduction to Greek Theatre/Drama & Oedipus Rex

Today, we will begin our reading Oedipus Rex, by Sophocles, as translated by Paul Roche. Before we begin reading, or as we read, we will learn about the Origins of Greek Drama/Western Theatre/Tragedy (Development)through lecture, short videos, and old school PowerPoints.  The objectives are historical: to understand the historical background and the foundations of modern theatre; literal--to understand the literary archetypes found in Oedipus; to learn the literary techniques found in all tragedies: irony, catharsis.  Lets start with a great background video: An Introduction to Greek Tragedy.  

Questions to understand: How did Greek drama develop? What were some of the stylistic developments of Greek tragedies/plays? What are some of the components or what makes Greek tragedy effective? Who were the giants of Greek Tragedy? Why are Greek tragedies so alluring/fascinating? 

You will take notes.  Look for answers to the following: Why are Greek tragedies so popular? With what issues do the tragedies grapple? What questions do the plays deal with?

Agenda for Expository Composition period 4

 1. Continue to browse for about 10-12 minutes to settle on a book length NON-FICTION text.  I have the following in the class: Fast Food Nation, Nickeled and Dimed; Why We Love; Misadventures of Akward Black Girl; A Boy Should Know How To Tie a Tie; and The Kapernick Effect.  You may choose another text from your list and with the first round, we will be reading as a GROUP! That means, you will work with a group. 

2. Article of The Week: This week's article of the week is a whole class article: The Ways We Lie by Stephanie Ericcson. The article is an example of Exemplification.  After reading, upload your SOAPS Analysis in Schoology.  Remember, assignments lock close after the period ends to ensure you are using your class time to work on the assignment and not work for another class or subject!  We will continue presentations on Wednesday! 

Agenda for Monday 2/7/22 period 5

 1. Use the period to write, and re-read your Archetype Mini-Research Paper. Remember, even though the essay is largely summary--it should be written/summarized in your own words. You give credit to your sources by using an attributive tags, According to ..........,"..............".  If you quote, you must use quotation marks and attributes or acknowledge the source.  Don't forget your screenshots of images of your archetype in a film or show or literature.  This assignment counts for TWO grades: one written, and one oral participation as we will present our research TOMORROW in class!

Extra Credit Opportunity: An Epic Boast

 In I'm Bad, L.L. Cool J states that "no rapper can rap quite like I can"......what can you do? What do you wish you could do? Create an epic boast that is either a poem with rhyme or rap with rhyme in which you use the conventions of an epic boast (genealogy, comparison, the personal pronoun "I"; superlatives--good, better, best, etc).

Soaps Analysis on a Song or Podcast

 Today, I will demonstrate how to do a SOAPS analysis on another type of text: A Song.  I will then walk you through a SOAPS Analysis Exemplar; and an academic summary. Then we will also practice scoring, applying the rubric. Lastly, we will have the chance to complete our own SOAPS analysis on a Song or Podcast and share with the class.

Welcome to Expository Composition 2022 period 4

Good Afternoon! We have many goals for today and this week. I will do most of the talking today, and you will do some writing.  Our goals are for me to create a seating chart; obtain a writing and reading thumbprint through our Opening Day Assessment; review our Class Rules and Class Routines; learn more about the course through exploration of the syllabus, and the LAUSD Standards as well as to begin getting to know each other and the tools that I use for the class--including the text, Patterns For College Reading and Writing. Here is our First Assignment-- The Opening Day Assessment. It should take us all 20-35 minutes.  

Opening Day Writing Prompt: Carefully read the following Opinion Piece: Why Making Friends in MidLife Is So Hard by Katharine Smyth.  Then, after reading the essay featured in the Atlantic, write a one or more page response that answers the question-- Why is Making Friends in Midlife So Hard? using evidence from the essay. Your response should demonstrate that you understand and can summarize the authors claim, point of view as well as add your own.

Friday, January 14th Friday Freewrite/Journal Response and Honoring the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. periods 4, 5, and 6

Good Morning! You made it through what will hopefully be the last rough week this semester.  I am crossing my fingers to see you all on Tuesday after we return from the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday.  Our lesson revolves around Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. First, you will do your Friday Freewrite using prompts from the 550 prompts for personal and narrative writing.  This time, PLEASE UPLOAD YOUR JOURNAL for Points. Remember, once you pick your prompt, your response must be one page!

 Today is Treat Yourself Thursday! Rather than give you additional assignments that have little context, I decided to allow YOU to select an article, series of poems, a podcast, or short story to read.  Yes, you must do a SOAPS Analysis but the text is your choice.  If you have a novel you would like to read, you may read and do the analysis on the portion you read! You must complete during class time however!
