H. World Literature

Carefully Read Chapters 5 (if you havent already) through 8 of Things Fall Apart. The Goal is to read 2-3 chapters per day so that we are finished by next Wednesday.  Also, continue writing and brainstorming ideas for your Final Senior Essay!

Things Fall Apart Questions. Be sure to BOTH discuss and submit written answers for these questions. 1. Are we meant to admire Okonkwo? Why or why not?  2. Why couldn't Okonkwo control his anger, even during The Week of Peace? 3.  Give two pieces of textual support that indicate Ikemefuna has become like "part of Okonkwo's family.  4. When is the Festival of the New Yam held?  Explain Okonkwo’s reaction to the festival What causes Okonkwo to shoot at Ekwefi?  What does it reveal about his character (be sure to use a variety of adjectives and descriptors).

Expository Composition period 2

Todays Article of the Week is here: Putting Parents in Their Place-Outside the Classroom 
Do not forget: A SOAPS is also due for last weeks article on White Privilege by Peggy McIntosh!

AP English Literature period 1

1. Consider the directorial changes made to the 2018 King Lear Adaptation.  Identify two changes/alterations made and their impact on the text.  You may want to consider such things like--how did a change or changes impact a theme (you would then identify that theme)?  Your understanding of the play.  Which changes did you like? Which did you not like and why?

2. Who would you cast in a 2019 Adaptation of King Lear? Which actors would you cast as:Lear?Kent?Cordelia? Goneril? Regan? Edmund? Edgar? Oswald? Albany? etc.

3. Critics call King Lear one of Shakespeare's most majestic and complex plays. Why do you think Lear has appeared on more AP Literature Free Response questions that even Hamlet?

4.  Forgive and forget  or thank you!  Write a letter of forgiveness to a friend or family member for something that they did to wrong you (or something you did to wrong them) OR write a thank you letter to someone who has aided you here at King Drew.  Include a salutation and proper closing.

Things Fall Apart Questions for writing and discussion.
1. What fear do you have? Write about a fear that you may have--or something that consciously or unconsciously influences your actions (2/3 to 1 page in length).
2.  In addition to strength and hard work, what characteristics do you wish/want in a fried or father (figure)? Why?
3. Okonkwo is a wealthy man, and respected elder of his village, Umuofia.  What are some of the signs of his wealth or social statues?
4. Why did Okonkwo's family suffer?
5. How did Unoka's legacy or lack of one impact Okonkwo both positively and negatively?
6. Why does Okonkwo go to Nwakibie's? What does Okonkwo ask for?

Expository Composition period 2

1. Today's Article of the Week is Entitled "White Privilege" by Sociologist and Researcher Peggy McIntosh.  We will not have time to read the entire article in class. (We will do our SOAPS in the Article in class perhaps tomorrow!)

3. Revise, revise, revise: Name Essays anyone? You should be reading my comments and feedback and reading your draft out loud and working on a new one!
Analyze the list that Peggy McIntosh includes.  Which of the items can you do or not? Now that it is 2019, there are many stores, shops that cater to minorities. But what about 40 years ago? What if we were not in California, and in, lets say, Montana? Identify those things you cant do or you are unsure about depending on the neighborhood, city or state.  Which of the list do you think is the MOST important? Identify 5-6.

1. Finish The Stranger, making note of interesting phrases and ideas Meursault says.  Be ready to discuss the ideas in the last 4 pages of the novel For example, "gentle indifference of the world."; Meursault says his mother had played at "beginning again", what does he mean by this? Why does Meursalt ultimately reject the aid of the chaplain? Why does he reject religion? Why does Meursalt say that Marie was kissing a new Meursault?

Based on reflection from the Nickeled and Dimed Group, I will need ALL groups to do the following BEFORE their Presentation.  Create a five slide powerpoint that includes the following:
1. A Title Slide with Group Members names; the name of the novel in italics; the author's name and a picture of the book. 2. A synopsis and summary of the novel--its genre; and its main themes.
3. One slide introducing the author and a bit about them. 4. A slide or two that introduces the objectives of your presentation; the key points of the nove; (4 key points) and what we (the class) will see/experience and why your group felt what you will produce is a reflection of your reading or understanding of the novel or book.
2. Read the sample name essays and revise your name essay.

 Extra Credit Opportunity: AP Review Monday, afterschool from 3:15-4:30. 20 points extra credit.
1. Go back to the timed writing you wrote yesterday: Re-read it and notice FEW of you have an argumentative themed based thesis statement that answers the questions: What does the author of my chosen text want the audience to know about generational differences? Or youth? or Old Age? Or how old and young don't see eye to eye? Write a THESIS Statement for the essay.
2. Those of you who attended Mrs. Espinoza's review also will receive extra credit.
3. Homework: Write essay on the Prose passage on the back of the AP Lit. Prompt given today.
4. Visit YOUR OWN Padlet of literary terms to review those.
5. Review those techniques that help you write: SOAPS; TPCASTT; etc.
6. Complete the Novel Review Grid.
7. Sleep and review!

AP English Literature Period 1

1. Today, you were given a free response prompt that dealt with generational conflict.  you wrote one essay in class using a text that might have been more difficult for you.  For homework, you will respond to the SAME prompt, but using a different text.  The expectations are that you brainstorm before writing; and that this essay has a clear thesis statements, and is supported by direct quotes, actions, and analysis. You may use your notes, book, play to write your essay. Please time yourself--take no more than 40 minutes to write this essay.
