Winter Break Reading and Writing Assignment: Period 1, 3, 4

1. All students are responsible for reading one novel of at least 200 pages that is at grade level. Many of you checked out your novels during the last two days of class. If you did not, you still must read a novel that you have not previously read before.
2. For every 10-18 pages, you will select a meaningful quote that is moving, revealing, or insightful. You will copy it and the page number on the left and then do a Say/Mean/Matter (or Reveal) response for each quote. Say means to put in your own wors or to paraphrase or translate. Mean is what the author intended to say or point out--this can be short. The Matter or Reveal should answer one or more of the following questions: What does the quote illustrate or show about the characters or situation in the text? Or what truth about humankind is illustrated by this quote?
You must have a minimum of 18 entries.
2. You must read, revise your Declaration of Independence.

We have already investigated the life of W.E.B. Dubois. However, in order to understand Chapter 2 and later Chapter 3 of The Souls of Black Folk, we will need our devices to investigate the United States during the time Dubois lived and wrote.  We will investigate Dubois' life.
We will also learn more about the time in which he lived. We will explore multi-media and online resources to create a timeline of his life and the events that influenced his writing, including the Souls of Black Folk
First, we will explore Jim Crow and (Jim Crow 2) the reality of life faced by many blacks born in the aftermath of the Emancipation Proclamation
We will also read copy of the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments.

H. Expository Composition period 6

Following is the rough draft of an opening paragraph for an essay on a theme. read the paragraph and then answer the questions that you were unable to answer in class:

In The Three Theban Plays, more commonly known as Oedipus Rex; Oedipus at Colonus and Antigone, a  subtle universal theme lays the foundation for the tragedy that dogs Oedipus and his entire biological line.  Most readers attend to  the horrific details the oracle predicts: that Oedipus was doomed to kill his father and marry his mother.  No matter how heinous those crimes, the fault of the story neither lies in blind Oedipus doing exactly what the Oracle predicted nor his denial of it. Rather the tragedy lies in the plot Lauis and his wife Jocasta hatch to outsmart the Gods, fate, destiny, in the first place.  Although man is knowing, he fashions “words and stagecraft too” words are tamed in “the net of his mind”. Nevertheless, pleads  the chorus, man is a finite being, and although he exerts much control over his being, ultimately there are many “things” he cant not control, order, escape or outwit.  The true tragedy lies in thinking we can do so.

Questions: Write out the sentences that appear to make claims or express opinions.
2. Which sentences appears to be the thesis statement?  3.  What does the paragraph do well and in what areas is attention needed? 4. Based on the opening paragraph, we would expect the next paragraph to.......

Dear Ms. Guy Letter

Write a letter of introduction to me, your English teacher. Model your letter after my letter to you, or you may do your own thing! Be sure that your letter is at least three full paragraphs.  Your letter must begin with two quotations. These quotes can be from a noted thinker, author, personality, historical figure, celebrity or entertainer.  I am impressed when the sources of your quotes are varied. Be sure to include the quote, and its source.  Your quotes should reflect an insight or epiphany, a goal, a reflection, or something that inspires you, reflects who you are or want to be.
After your quotes, and your opening salutation, describe yourself reflected in three categories: your summer accomplishments and travels, your interests/hobbies/competencies or goals. You must also include a short assessment of yourself as a student.  Who were your English and History teachers last year? What is your favorite subject and why?  What should I know-- and you know about yourself as a student?
Your tone should be academically appropriate but at times conversational to mark your authentic voice.
End your letter with an appropriate closing, your signature, your printed name, and your period.
