In his poem, "The South" Langston Hughes calls the south "seductive as a dark-eyed whore, passionate, cruel, honey-lipped, syphilitic".....
What exactly is syphilis? Syphilis has a damning legacy. What is the legacy, that Hughes may have known of when he wrote "The South"?
